MS&L hires FDA's top comms director for SVP post

NEW YORK: Peter Pitts, who holds the top communications position at the US Food and Drug Administration, will become MS&L's SVP of health affairs.

NEW YORK: Peter Pitts, who holds the top communications position at the US Food and Drug Administration, will become MS&L's SVP of health affairs.

Pitts will join the agency on June 21. A successor has not yet been named at the FDA.

At MS&L, Pitts will offer clients in the food and healthcare industries strategic advice on working with the FDA as "not only a regulator but also a partner," he said.

He will also help clients create consumer awareness programs.

"The health issues are becoming a major factor in our business," said Joe Gleason, president, North America, MS&L. "I think he'll bring tremendous insight."

As associate commissioner for external communications since April 2003, Pitts provided policy and program guidance on issues ranging from drug importation to direct-to-consumer advertising.

"I'm making the change now for personal reasons," Pitts said. "My time at the FDA has been incredibly exhilarating and exciting and fun, and I hope to bring that exuberance to the private sector."
