SAN FRANCISCO: PR21 is representing Comdex in its recent decision to postpone its Las Vegas 2004 show, which was scheduled for November 14th.
MediaLive, the company responsible for the Comdex trade shows, announced the postponement yesterday via a press release.
Comdex PR manager and PR21 senior account supervisor Josh Aroner could not disclose any details of the campaign, outside of saying, "We're doing everything possible to support the [press] release."
"Clearly an industry this large needs an industry event," he said.
PR21 was hired only to help with PR surrounding this announcement, according to MediaLive PR manager Ben Stricker.
Emily Swanson, former director of PR, has left the company, and Stricker will now oversee the company's PR. All future MediaLive PR, for Comdex and other shows, will continue to be handled internally, Sticker said.
MediaLive cited its desire to reshape the event with the cooperation of information technology industry leaders. The company has established an advisory board with members from AMD, Global Technology Distribution Council, Microsoft Corp, and Oracle. Executives from Cisco, Dell and Intel have also agreed to join the Advisory Board and invitations have been extended to other industry leading companies.
MediaLive took responsibility for the Comdex brand last year with the intent to rebuild it as a business-to-business IT event.
Attendance at Comdex 2003 included about 40,000 qualified technology buyers, 550 exhibiting, companies and more than 900 journalists. The show's attendance peaked in 1998 with 212,000 attendees and 2,480 exhibitors, according to C-Net News.
Some cite the show's decline to the emergence of rival Computer Electronic Show (CES), also held in Las Vegas. In 2003, CES boasted 130,000 attendees and 2,400 exhibitors. The CES show, which debuted in New York in June 1967, is run by the Consumer Electronics Association. Other niche-focused exhibitions focusing on wireless technology or specific products have also been attracting a lot of participants.
MediaLive is in the process of contacting sponsors, partners, exhibitors, speakers, vendors and attendees to alert them to the postponement. Comdex Brazil, Comdex Korea, Comdex Scandinavia, Comdex Saudi Arabia, and Comdex Greece are all still currently scheduled.
The next Comdex Las Vegas is scheduled for November 13 - 17, 2005, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. A MediaLive executive told C-Net news that the event would be held in 2005.
