CLEVELAND: Wal-Mart has hired Edward Howard & Co. to work on PR issues involved with the opening of new stores across Ohio. Wal-Mart recently hired another agency, Shank Public Relations, to perform similar work in Indiana.

BOSTON: Five Brodeur Worldwide European offices have merged with Germany-based European Communications Consultants Group to form a communications consultancy with more than 600 employees in nine European markets. The consultancy will operate in Europe as Pleon, and the global network will be known as Brodeur/Pleon Worldwide. The agency's brand will not change in the US, Asia, or Latin America. Brodeur's offices in France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom merged with the offices of the ECC Group.

LOS ANGELES: Mark Malinowski, formerly director and creative director of Ketchum Entertainment Marketing (KEM), is moving to the New York brand marketing practice as SVP/director. Malinowski founded KEM four years ago with Tom Freydl, who will now take over KEM as East Coast MD. New hire and product-placement specialist Mark Owens, most recently with Davie-Brown Entertainment, will become KEM's West Coast director.

SAN FRANCISCO: Kevin McGuirk, the former VP of corporate communications at BEA Systems, has joined Fleishman-Hillard's San Francisco office as an SVP. He will oversee that office's technology practice.

DETROIT: Weber Shandwick is adding three new staffers in its Detroit office, including Dan Jankowski as an SVP. Jankowski had been director of public affairs for Comcast's Midwest division.

NEW YORK: RF Binder Partners has been named agency of record for DealerTrack, a New York company that operates online services for auto dealers. CooperKatz and Company is the outgoing agency on the account.

LONDON: Fleishman-Hillard has appointed Kevin Bell and John Saunders as regional directors for Fleishman-Hillard Europe. The two have been promoted as EVPs and senior partners and will report to Dave Senay, regional president for Europe and Africa.

NEW YORK: Financial PR veteran Ted Pincus has joined PR-agency consultants StevensGouldPartners as a partner. Pincus' previous firm, The Financial Relations Board, was sold for $40 million to True North Communications in 2000.

NEW YORK: Dawn Bridges has been named SVP of corporate communications for Time Inc. She succeeds John Needham, SVP of public affairs, who has left to form his own marketing company after a 25-year career with the company. Bridges previously worked at Warner Music as EVP of corporate communications.

MIDDLESEX, UK: Duncan Burke has left his post as GlaxoSmithKline's VP of corporate image and reputation amid a restructuring of the PR department in the UK. Burke, who joined the pharmaceutical company five years ago to establish a framework for handling reputation issues, noted that GSK is now focusing on implementing the plan with a strong focus on media relations. PR in the US will not be affected, he said.

BOSTON: Stephen Burgay has joined Boston University as VP for marketing and communications. He will oversee the school's brand and marketing initiatives, as well as PR for the president and board of trustees. He joins from John Hancock Financial Services, where he was a senior marketing executive.

LOS ANGELES: CBS has hired Phil Gonzales as VP of communications. He will be in charge of all public relations on daytime, late night, series, and long-form projects. He was formerly VP of communications for WBTV.

NEW YORK: Curt Block, former VP of media relations at NBC, has been named EVP at the Vaughan Communications Group.

NEW YORK: Alan Taylor Communications is opening an office in Charlotte, NC. SVP Brett Jewkes will relocate from New York to head up the new presence.

LOS ANGELES: Bragman Nyman Cafarelli has changed its name to BNC as part of a re-branding effort. The company has also left its Beverly Hills location for new offices at the Pacific Design Center.

BOSTON: Following her promotion in June to director of Manning Selvage & Lee's (MS&L) Boston healthcare practice, Monique da Silva has been named managing director of the office. She takes over the role from Marie van Luling, who has decided to leave the firm at the end of the month.

NEW YORK: Godiva Chocolatier has named Alison Brod Public Relations as PR AOR for the brand. The firm will support all PR efforts, playing a significant role in Godiva's new product launches and other corporate initiatives.

SAN FRANCISCO: Marc McCarthy has joined OpenTV as VP of corporate communications. McCarthy was previously executive director of communications and entertainment publicity at Starz Encore Group. OpenTV develops software and services for interactive television.

LOS ANGELES: Weber Shandwick has been named PR AOR for the National Notary Association, an organization dedicated to furthering the practice, professionalism, and ethical standards of the Notary. The firm is charged with helping to launch an aggressive PR program to build brand awareness at the national, regional, and industry group level.

CHICAGO: Equity Office Properties Trust has appointed Elizabeth Coronelli SVP of IR. Prior to joining Equity Office, Coronelli served as VP of IR for General Growth Properties, the shopping-mall operator.

MEXICO CITY: 3Com, which provides voice- and data-networking products, has selected InfoSol as its PR AOR for Mexico. InfoSol will support 3Com Mexico in communication strategies including PR consulting, market intelligence and web communication services.

ANDOVER, MA: Pan Communications has won three new clients, including Systinet, which develops web services software and infrastructure; KnowNow, which lets users update enterprise information in real time; and identity management firm M-Tech.

PORTLAND, OR: Tim Filkins has joined Lane, a marketing communications and PR agency, as CFO and COO. Prior to Lane, Filkins worked as VP and CFO at Pacific Paper Trading Company, and before that he was a partner with Moss Adams LLP.
