Grove's world has no more room for Hilton

You have to admire a guy who bites the hand that feeds him, especially when that guy is a gossip columnist who gets no respect and that hand belongs to the greatest source of trashy news since Bill Clinton.

You have to admire a guy who bites the hand that feeds him, especially when that guy is a gossip columnist who gets no respect and that hand belongs to the greatest source of trashy news since Bill Clinton.

Lloyd Grove, who left the prim, tidy world of Washington, DC gossip ("Two more senators were seen at the Palm yesterday. Sources say they had salad.") for the full-contact New York City socialite scene ("That 16-year-old billionaire starlet made off with my stash again"), made an announcement over the holiday weekend that stunned gossip mongers citywide - which is more than anyone can say for his columns since he first arrived at the Daily News. He swore never to write about Paris Hilton again. "I just think that it's time to go cold turkey, get off that celebrity crack pipe," he said on Today, just one of many opportunities he took to capitalize on the announcement. Indeed, the early New Year's resolution won Grove enough press to fill all the empty suits at Bungalow 8. He also claims to have received more than 500 e-mails praising the decision. Of course, far be it for us to point out that the announcement yielded a lot more publicity for the banished than the banisher. Or that Grove broke his resolution before the ball even dropped, simply referring to the heiress as "[redacted]." Instead, we'll praise Grove for trading in years of juicy columns to be the subject of one big story. And we'll look forward to reading that much more about Lindsay Lohan.
