NEW YORK: Interpublic Group (IPG) has appointed chairman Michael Roth CEO. Previous CEO and president David Bell will become co-chairman.
Bell was named IPG CEO in 2003 and joined the holding company in 2001 as vice chairman. Roth took the chairman post last year and began serving as a board member in 2002.
Presiding director Frank Borelli said that the decision was in the best interests of IPG and its shareholders.
"Back in July 2004, David and I had indicated that we [would] develop a relationship that would make the best use of our respective skill sets. We also mentioned that this relationship would need time to evolve," Roth said in a conference call.
Roth added that his duties will still involve strategic and client matters, and also operational and financial issues. Bell will focus on key clients and growth.
Harris Diamond, Weber Shandwick CEO, told PRWeek in November that he expected IPG's major PR clients to get hands-on attention from the holding company's leadership.
IPG's PR firms include WS, Golin Harris, MWW Group, and DeVries.
