WALTHAM, MA: Open-source software company Novell has named Phil Juliano as VP of brand management and corporate communications. He replaces Hal Thayer, who left to work as a marketing consultant.
Juliano joined the company from Symbol Technologies, where he was CMO. He also has worked for IBM, where he took part in the company?s open-source Linux initiatives.
Juliano will help to shape Novell?s brand, as well as over-see external and internal communications.
Novell, one of several players in the open-source software market, is a major competitor of Microsoft?s. Open-source operating systems can run on the same hardware as Microsoft Windows, but they also can be copied and modified freely.
The Mozilla Foundation has found recent success with its open-source Firefox browser, which is chipping away at Internet Explorer?s dominance in the browser market. (See Analysis, p. 11.)
Novell has been trying to elevate its Linux products and move customers from its NetWare operating system to Linux. While it does so, the company is fighting off Microsoft, which is trying to woo those customers to Windows, and other open-source software companies.
