CUPERTINO, CA; Marlena Fernandez-Berkowitz has joined Symantec as VP of international communications operations in the wake of that company?s acquisition of Veritas, where she was VP of corporate communications.

Fernandez will oversee PR teams outside the US, helping build already-existing PR services as well as developing additional communications and brand services. Hers is a newly created position.

Symantec shareholders approved the $13.5 billion acquisition ? considered one the largest software mergers in the technology industry?s history ? on June 24, and the deal closed July 2.

The merger did not lead to any layoffs on either PR team, and Veritas? entire PR office has joined Symantec, said Genevieve Haldeman, Symantec?s director of corporate PR. Symantec?s Donald Frischmann will remain as SVP of communications and brand management.

?I?ve had international responsibility before, but not at a company of this size,? said Fernandez-Berkowitz, adding that she will focus on enhancing the international teams? capabilities beyond media relations to include internal communications and branding. ?It?s a great challenge to build out something new.?

Symantec will also continue to work with Connect PR and Carryon Communication, added Haldeman. Connect handles corporate and product PR, while Carryon also works on product PR. Edelman, who was Veritas' AOR, will also handle product PR. But no decision has been made on whether those agency assignments will change as Symantec integrates Veritas? technology into its product portfolio, Haldeman said.
