MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA: Elliot Schrage has joined Google as VP of global communications and public affairs, furthering the company's Washington aspirations. He will report to CEO Eric Schmidt.
Schrage was previously with the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations, where he was the Bernard Schwartz Senior Fellow in business and foreign policy. He was not available for comment.
Schrage also has served as an SVP at Gap, overseeing global affairs, and as an MD with Clark & Weinstock, a public policy and management consulting firm.
Schrage's hire marks the second attempt by Google to shore up its public affairs credentials with a Washington insider. Earlier this year, Google announced it had hired Dan Senor as VP of global communications strategy, but Senor never started with the company. Google declined to say why.
Senor was previously a senior adviser to L. Paul Bremer, administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. Senor served as the chief spokesman until the handover of power in Iraq.
Google opened a lobbying office in DC last month, as well.
