Massachusetts governor William Weld and currently public policy VP at US

West, to its government relations ranks as director of corporate

affairs.

Tobin, who starts at Microsoft in mid-March, will oversee federal, state

and local regulatory issues and coordinate public affairs and community

relations programs. He will also oversee Microsoft’s political action

committee. Based at the behemoth’s corporate HQ in Redmond, WA, he will

report to William Newcomb, EVP of legal and corporate affairs.

Despite Microsoft’s well-publicized legal woes and its increased

government lobbying activities, Tobin’s post is not a new one. He

succeeds Kimberly Ellwanger, who left the company in October to spend

more time with her family. According to Newcomb, Microsoft considered

more than 120 candidates for the position before selecting Tobin.
