LONDON: The Interpublic Group, parent to industry heavy-hitters

Shandwick and Weber PR Worldwide, has closed in on the purchase of

UK-based IR giant Maitland Consultancy, several sources reported last

week. The deal, valued at close to dollars 50 million, is the latest in

a string of pacts marking consolidation in the UK PR landscape.

Both parties were tight-lipped on the talks. Interpublic execs did not

return calls for comment, while Maitland consultant William Clutterbuck

said, ’I will not comment on this. There’s been speculation before, and

now there’s speculation again.’

Based in the West End of London, Maitland’s high-profile financial PR

and IR projects have included advising Olivette during its successful

bid for Telecom Italia and helping NatWest ward off an offer from Bank

of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland. Clients include British Telecom

and National Westminster Bank.
