MILWAUKEE: Midwest PR pros look out: Milwaukee Magazine is

preparing a list of the region’s best and worst PR people for its July

issue.

The magazine, which has already ranked the city’s best builders and

church services, has sent out 200 questionnaires to members of the local

business community. The surveys ask participants - including in-house

corporate PR pros - to highlight the blunders as well as the

achievements of PR agencies they have used. Respondents have been given

the option of providing the information anonymously.

’We wanted to find out who the reputable agencies are and which

non-profit and government agencies are performing,’ said Milwaukee

Magazine editor John Fennell.

Fennell added that the piece is designed to shed some light on what he

considers to be a little-known profession with a lot of influence. The

rankings are also intended to help companies find the best and brightest

PR pros.

Gary Myers, president of regional leader Morgan & Myers, is not happy

with the idea.

’I think the piece would seem to reflect a shallow understanding of what

PR pros do,’ he said. ’The best PR advice is not always made public. It

could have been advice given to a CEO to avoid a strike.’

Myers added that clients commenting on the work of their agencies

constitutes a breach of professional courtesy. ’This is like getting law

firms to comment on each other,’ he said.
