DIARY: PR pro doubles as coach for UConn

Talk about a dream job in PR.

Talk about a dream job in PR.

Talk about a dream job in PR.

When he’s not scampering along the sidelines as head coach of the

defending NCAA Division I men’s basketball champs, University of

Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun pulls down a hefty paycheck for what is

described as ’University Public Relations Speaking Fees.’

In fact, of Calhoun’s dollars 875,000 compensation package, dollars

715,749 is earmarked for PR duties - leaving a paltry dollars 159,251 as

his base salary for coaching.

It’s no wonder the school places such value on the team’s biggest

spokesman: the NCAA doled out over dollars 710,000 to UConn last year

for its tournament appearance. For the dollars 715,000, Calhoun does

what might be expected of any low-level AE: shoveling quotes and info to

a squad of reporters that follows the team around, affectionately dubbed

’The Horde.’

The spokesman/uber-coach could not be reached for comment, which for any

other rep would be unacceptable. However, given his loss in the Big East

Championship to St. John’s and the upcoming NCAA Tournament , we’ll give

him a pass.
