Once synonymous with tires, the company’s aerospace business was
bolstered significantly by the dollars 2.2 billion merger. From an
in-house PR perspective, however, it proved ruinous: several of its top
pros abandoned ship when the company moved its corporate headquarters
from Richfield, OH to Coltec’s Charlotte base. Although the combined
companies had 13 PR pros, only four remained when the dust settled.
Last week, BFGoodrich took the first steps towards rebuilding the PR
department, adding Gail Warner as manager of media relations and Marty
Viser as manager of community relations and corporate giving. The
company had been looking to fill the media relations post since August
and the community relations post since November.
’It’s impossible to do what we’re trying to do with just four or five
people,’ said BFGoodrich VP of corporate communications Kevin Ramundo,
who was VP of public affairs and IR at Coltec prior to the merger. ’The
opportunities for BFGoodrich from a communications standpoint are huge,
but we can’t take advantage of them without great people.’
Warner has been charged with reinforcing relationships with the national
and local media as well as communicating with the company’s customers,
stockholders and other key audiences. Previously, she served as
marketing communications manager for the Automotive Systems Group of
Johnson Controls and held several marketing and communications positions
at Sargento Foods.
Viser will assist with community relations, employee campaigns and The
BFGoodrich Foundation. Most recently, she was assistant VP/corporate
community involvement coordinator at First Union Corp.
The company is still searching for a director of aerospace
communications and a community relations and internal communications
