PR industry in the UK.

Hoping to celebrate the millennial year in style (and, perhaps, in

song), GCI Group’s UK outpost has tapped Simon Warne - a former

journalist and editor - to write and direct Original Spin, a comedy set

in London during the early 1950s.

According to Warne, the play takes place during a period of renewed

confidence for Britain after WWII. Pros responsible for media relations

during the war, he explained, found an opportunity within a recovering

economy to set up as consultants. The play takes a light-hearted (but

supposedly accurate) look at how the profession gathered momentum.

GCI UK CEO Adrian Wheeler said the agency views the play as a

celebration of sorts. ’We commissioned Original Spin as an unusual way

of celebrating the millennium year with our clients, employees and

friends,’ he quipped.

’We were lucky enough to know a playwright who has observed PR from the

inside. His portrait of PR is a little painful at times, but thoroughly

entertaining.’
