NEW YORK: Details magazine publicist Kathleen Madden has landed on
her feet, despite the suspension of the men’s lifestyle title.
After the Details staff was informed of the decision at the end of
March, Madden was quickly snapped up by GQ to serve as the magazine’s
director of PR. In that post, she will handle events such as the annual
’Man of the Year’ bash.
While Madden formally begins her new job next Monday, she is continuing
to field calls about Details, which is tentatively set to return in
The magazine’s Web site, complete with subscription information, was
still operational as of last Monday.
Madden should consider herself lucky, as recent closures have left a
handful of top magazine publicists pounding the pavement - such as
former Life PR director Alison Hart Cirenza, who had been with the
magazine for more than five years. Though Life is scheduled to close its
doors on May 11, its remaining staffers will be allowed to use the
offices until July 7.
At GQ, Madden replaces outgoing PR director Mary Wible, who has teamed
with GQ special projects director Deborah Williamson to form Swell
Productions, an event production and publicity shop. The two have
already been retained by their former employer to consult on ’Man of the
Year’ and other events, and are also preparing a film premiere and
launch party for the Merchant/Ivory production Set Me Free, opening
Wible said the idea for the company sprang from her friendship and
working relationship with Williamson.
