Diary: Padre doubles up at home in error

Media guides for MLB teams are rarely newsmakers in their own right, but the one for the San Diego Padres is making headlines the team would rather not see.

The cover features owner John Moores, president Larry Lucchino, GM Kevin

Towers and manager Bruce Bochy clad in western garb at Rawhide Western

Town, a tourist attraction in Scottsdale, AZ. The four are standing in

front of the Rawhide Jail, a sign on which reads, ’Want someone

arrested? Bribe the sheriff.’

In an interesting twist of fate, Al Martin, the Padres’ left fielder,

and Shawn Haggerty-Martin were arrested and jailed last month after

allegedly exchanging punches. Haggerty-Martin told cops they were

married in Las Vegas in late ’98. Martin said he recalled the ceremony

but didn’t think it was real.

It gets better. Haggerty-Martin claims that Martin is married to two

women. Now there’s an interesting statistic for the media guide -

doubles (36), home runs (24), wives (2).
