MADRID: Fleishman-Hillard has boosted its presence in Spain,

absorbing its local Madrid affiliate and hiring a veteran of the

country’s PR scene.

Fleishman has been present in the country since 1991 through affiliate

Circulo Cinco. But its hiring of local PR veteran Jan Soderberg to head

up the Madrid outpost sends a clear signal that the firm is more serious

than ever before about what is clearly a booming market.

Fleishman international president Rick Sullivan said the former staff of

Circulo Cinco, including its two principals, will be incorporated into

the 10-strong Madrid office, which he hopes will reach dollars 1 million

in revenues within its first year of operation. The office already

boasts five clients, including two of Fleishman’s US regulars, Lockheed

Martin and the National Sunflower Association, seeking better

representation in Spain.

The strength of Spain’s economy and client requests contributed to the

decision to open the Madrid office, as did the connection between the

Spanish and Latin American economies. ’(Spain) is one of the major

business gateways to Latin America,’ Sullivan explained. Fleishman hopes

to expand operations in Brazil and Argentina this year, and believes it

can garner business from Spanish companies entering those markets.

Soderberg, who spent 11 years in Madrid with H&K, was most recently a

director with Grupo K Communications, a Spanish integrated marketing

services firm.

He will report to John Modzelewski, president of Fleishman/Europe.
