absorbing its local Madrid affiliate and hiring a veteran of the
country’s PR scene.
Fleishman has been present in the country since 1991 through affiliate
Circulo Cinco. But its hiring of local PR veteran Jan Soderberg to head
up the Madrid outpost sends a clear signal that the firm is more serious
than ever before about what is clearly a booming market.
Fleishman international president Rick Sullivan said the former staff of
Circulo Cinco, including its two principals, will be incorporated into
the 10-strong Madrid office, which he hopes will reach dollars 1 million
in revenues within its first year of operation. The office already
boasts five clients, including two of Fleishman’s US regulars, Lockheed
Martin and the National Sunflower Association, seeking better
representation in Spain.
The strength of Spain’s economy and client requests contributed to the
decision to open the Madrid office, as did the connection between the
Spanish and Latin American economies. ’(Spain) is one of the major
business gateways to Latin America,’ Sullivan explained. Fleishman hopes
to expand operations in Brazil and Argentina this year, and believes it
can garner business from Spanish companies entering those markets.
Soderberg, who spent 11 years in Madrid with H&K, was most recently a
director with Grupo K Communications, a Spanish integrated marketing
