Davis.Comm gives birth to Incubate PR

SAN FRANCISCO: Yet another San Francisco Bay Area PR firm is

throwing in the towel on so-called ’traditional PR’ to chase the sexier

start-up market. Davis.Comm, a three-year-old hi-tech boutique with such

clients as Upside Media and Chipshot.com, announced plans last week to

spin off a new agency devoted exclusively to launching pre-IPO Internet

companies.

Called Incubate PR, the new offshoot will operate much like Spark PR and

Launchpod, both of which offer clients pre-launch services such as

messaging, media relations and analyst tours, then turn them over to

larger agencies.

’We will not be getting involved in many of the traditional tactics that

support ongoing programs, like speaking opportunities or pitching

editorial calendars,’ said Jeff Davis, an AlexanderOgilvy alum who

founded both Incubate and Davis.Comm. ’Truthfully, I don’t think many of

these smaller companies even need that kind of thing.’ He estimated that

the average client engagement at Incubate will last three to four

months.

While not officially slated to debut until June, Incubate has already

picked up a client: eFounders, a start-up recently hatched by

DigitalVentures.

Davis admitted that at least part of his motivation for creating

Incubate was to attract employees who might otherwise go to a dot-com.

’It’s a great hiring tool. We can give employees the opportunity to do

just the fun stuff,’ he said.

Current Davis.Comm clients will continue to be supported by existing

agency staff. However, all new business resources and staff will be

diverted to Incubate.
