The dollars 11 billion rail giant is working with Heidrick & Struggles

in New York to fill the new chief communications officer slot, which

reports directly to UP chairman, president and CEO Richard Davidson. The

successful candidate will be charged with developing a new integrated

communications plan for the company.

While UP stomached its share of PR blows in recent years due to delays

and equipment problems, SVP of corporate relations Robert Starzel said

its image has ’been through a significant turnaround. We are moving to a

level of quality that requires some strategic planning and talking about

why the railroad will continue to improve.’

Boasting a 17-strong in-house PR team, UP maintains two employee TV

networks and an employee intranet site, all of which will fall under the

domain of the chief communications officer.

Starzel said the company does not employ a PR agency of record, although

it has used firms for individual projects. UP’s trucking company, he

noted, has consulted with Hill & Knowlton.
