LOS ANGELES: Artist Management Group (AMG), the talent firm

launched by former Creative Artists Agency uber-agent Mike Ovitz in

early 1999, has made its first major PR hire, snaring Burson-Marsteller

Southern California market leader Michael Burns to serve as MD of

communications and strategic planning.

In what is a newly created position and department, Burns will be

responsible for overseeing media relations and communications for AMG’s

growing network of genre-specific divisions, which include sports, rap

and animation.

He will also oversee overall corporate communications for the agency,

which is challenging long-time leader CAA for turf in the competitive

Hollywood talent management industry.

Longtime Sony Pictures Entertainment publicist Peter Wilkes has been

brought on board to assist AMG with press relations as an independent

consultant. As of now, the company does not employ a PR agency of

record.

Burns, who worked for Burson for about six years, said he did not think

his replacement has been named. However, he noted that Al Tortorella had

recently been given the title of West Coast CEO and would likely fill

the gap.
