That Weber would succeed Lord Chadlington as head of IPG’s International
PR arm - comprised of Shandwick, Weber Public Relations Worldwide and
Golin/Harris - came as no surprise, given Chadlington’s stated desire to
leave the company. However, Weber’s promotion was far more significant:
IPG merged International PR into its existing Allied Communications
Group (ACG), and anointed Weber to head the unit.
Weber thus now sits at the top of a dollars 1.3 billion division that
encompasses holdings in PR, research and management consulting. With the
addition of International PR, ACG becomes the second-largest division of
IPG, behind only the mammoth McCann-Erickson advertising unit.
Weber said that placing IPG’s PR firms into the ACG mix makes a good
deal of sense because of the synergistic possibilities it provides. ’We
will have the ability to cross-sell different disciplines to clients,
which will spur organic growth for the company as a whole,’ he
Weber was also quick to note the significance of a PR executive being
placed in a pivotal management role with a holding company: ’I think it
will be good for the PR world to have one of our own in a position to

’We are currently the second-largest holder of PR firms, but our goal is
to be number one,’ he said.
Weber, who maintains offices in both New York and Cambridge, MA, will
continue in his CEO position at Weber PR Worldwide until a replacement
is named. While he said that he usually leans toward promoting from
within, he refused to comment on whether Weber president Marijean
Lauzier was being considered for the post. ’That’s something we can talk
about in the future,’ he said.
A dollars 5 billion corporation, IPG’s major units include the
McCann-Erickson World Group, the Lowe Group, Draft Worldwide, Initiative
Media Worldwide, Octagon and ACG.
