veteran Susan Henderson away from Miller Brewing to serve as its VP of

communications.

The PR post is a new one for Kohl’s. According to SVP of marketing Julie

Gardner, the company felt its recent national expansion warranted having

an in-house PR specialist.

’With the growth of Kohl’s and our continuing desire to build the brand,

it made sense,’ Gardner said.

Henderson, previously Miller’s director of marketing communications,

comes highly recommended. One Midwest PR veteran praised the hire,

promising that ’Henderson will bring an awful lot of credibility to that

company.’

Gardner declined to comment on whether Henderson’s arrival signals a new

emphasis on PR - Kohl’s does not currently employ an agency of

record.

The company recently switched advertising firms, dumping J. Walter

Thompson for McCann-Erickson.

Henderson has chosen a good time to join Kohl’s. It is one of the few

department-store chains thriving financially - the company is presently

the best-performing retail stock in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index, and

has reported increases in same-store sales every month this year.

Given the company’s expansion plans, having somebody like Henderson on

board is a no-brainer. Following its purchase of 33 Caldor stores in the

Northeast, Kohl’s boasts 298 stores in 25 states and plans to open 21

more by the end of the year.
