structure.

Until August 1, Starwood’s corporate PR responsibilities had been

divvied up among specialist managers, each assigned to an individual

hotel brand.

Now, VP of corporate PR K.C. Kavanagh will handle all general corporate

media requests and cross-brand efforts. Fellow VP of PR Katie Meyer will

take responsibility for all brand-specific PR, mining out tasks to a

staff of cross-trained generalists.

’In the past structure, the individual PR directors became more brand

managers, bogged down with non-media tasks like writing newsletters,’

said Starwood SVP of corporate affairs Dan Gibson. ’Now everyone on the

team is a generalist who can talk about anything. It’s an

all-hands-on-deck kind of structure.’

Gibson confirmed that at least two PR director posts were

eliminated.

’There was some duplication at the director level, brands that had two

people when only one was needed,’ he explained. Though Gibson refused to

name those let go, one source pointed to Richard Altman of Four Points

Hotels and Margaret Vodopia of the Luxury Collection as likely pink-slip

recipients.

According to Kavanagh, Starwood has other PR plans on the horizon,

including developing an around-the-clock media hotline.
