WASHINGTON, DC: VP candidate Joseph Lieberman took a giant step

towards bolstering his communications outfit last week by signing up

veteran politico and renowned pundit Catherine ’Kiki’ McLean.

McLean, who can often be found jousting with Oliver North on MSNBC’s

Equal Time, is a partner in the Dewey Square Group, a DC-based

agency.

But she also boasts a distinguished background in Democratic politics,

having served as communications director for the Democratic National

Committee and as Tipper Gore’s press secretary during the 1992

election.

Former US representative Jim Chapman said McLean will more than hold her

own against the GOP’s top voices. ’She’s gentle when she needs to be,

but can be razor-sharp,’ he noted.

Joining Lieberman marks a return of sorts for McLean. She briefly served

as the Gore 2000 press secretary last fall, but left when the campaign

relocated to Nashville. She stayed active in the Gore effort, however,

serving as a spokesperson in a more limited capacity.

McLean is pitted against Dirk Vande Beek, press secretary and

spokesperson for GOP VP nominee Dick Cheney.
