NEW YORK: The New York Times Digital Group has hired GCI Group as

its first-ever agency of record. The firm was selected over a host of

contenders, including Ruder Finn, MWW/Savitt and Burson-Marsteller, for

the one-year contract.

Lisa Carparelli, director of communications at NYT Digital, said she

picked GCI over one of her former employers, Burson-Marsteller, because

of the agency’s digital-era savvy.

’(GCI) knew our industry and they knew our differentiated place in it,’

she explained. ’They demonstrated a real passion.’

GCI will draw on its corporate technology practice to service company

sites such as NYTimes.com and knowledge network Abuzz.com, while the

consumer marketing practice will attempt to heighten awareness of other

destinations, such as NYToday.com, the Boston Globe’s Boston.com,

WineToday.com and Golf Digest.com.

GCI and NYT Digital are currently wrangling over whether the assignment

will be expanded to include IR. The company will likely go public at

some point this year.
