When Schwartz Communications recently decided to double the size of its San Francisco outpost, the agency needed to drum up a pool of good candidates quickly - not an easy task in today's tight labor market.
Considering the fact that 80% of her San Francisco staff rely on public transportation and do not own cars, executive vice-president Cecilia Roach came up with an 'only-in-California' solution.
Starting last month, every time a Schwartz employee refers someone as a potential agency hire, the employee's name gets entered in a drawing for the chance to win a sports car convertible for a weekend getaway.
Lucky senior account executive Wendy Spander scored the wheels in the first drawing last month. And in an ironic stroke of luck, when the Mazda Miata the agency had reserved turned out not to be available, the rental company substituted a BMW Z3 - the same car driven by CEO Steve Schwartz.
'That's why we're calling this the 'CEO for the Weekend' program,' explained Roach.
No word on whether or not Spander or other winners will get other bigwig perks like frequent flyer miles or a Platinum card.
