San Antonio-based HEB chose Pierpont over Fleishman-Hillard, Neihaus Ryan Wong, Chrisman & Associates, Christian-Hubbel and Warren Cordis McCullar, said Kate Brown, HEB's public affairs manager for Central Texas.

Houston's Pierpont recently branched out to Austin, and Brown said HEB was impressed by the firm's enthusiasm for the new market and its hi-tech experience.

The chain is revamping its HEB.com Web site to enable online purchases from nine Austin stores. Austin was picked as a springboard for e-commerce initiatives because it is one of the most wired cities in the US, Brown said. The company initially considered fulfilling Internet orders from warehouses but instead decided to operate out of existing stores to speed introductions to other cities. About 30 of HEB's 272 stores are located in Austin.

Pierpont will help publicize online sales throughout next year.
