WASHINGTON: What's the definition of a good PR firm? Fed up with fuzzy answers, Netrepreneur.net, an emerging technology non-profit, has started an online debate.
The debate was sparked when Mitch Arnowitz, director of Netpreneur's business development, asked for submissions to form a list of the top technology PR firms in the Mid Atlantic area.
Arnowitz received a lengthy list of self-serving responses. But without criteria or definition, it was hard to develop a list. Other lists rank agencies by numbers - billings, revenues, number of employees - not always meaningful criteria because they don't consider results or happy clients.
Since posing the question, Arnowitz has yet to receive a definitive answer.
Indeed many correspondents couldn't even agree on what a PR firm does (media relations, investor relations, marketing, strategic services?) let alone how to define a good one.
Most agreed results based on client business objectives were key, but no-one has yet to define how these results might be measured to help produce the list. Arnowitz plans to keep the dialog going for a few more weeks before attempting to put together a list. Others who want to add their comments can sign do so through Netpreneur's Web site.
