IRVINE, CA: Orange County-based Paine & Associates today announced the adoption of a new name, the opening of a New York office and the addition of more than dollars 1 million in new business from such major national brands as Blockbuster, Procter & Gamble and DirecTV.

PainePR New York will be headed by senior VP Paul Wood, who is relocating from the Irvine, CA office. Wood, who worked for Burson-Marsteller's Asia operations before joining Paine six years ago, will be joined by a number of mid-management employees in New York. The goal is to grow the office to about 15-20 full-time employees, according to CEO David Paine.

'The office will start with an initial foundation of about dollars 1-2 million in current business from Iomega, portions of Polaroid and some new business from P&G,' said Paine. 'But our intention is to be very aggressive in growing our presence in the New York area, not just in terms of targeting business regionally, but in leveraging our combined offices in Los Angeles, Orange County and New York to pursue major national accounts.'

The strategy is already bearing fruit. LA-based DirecTV handed PainePR its business to develop and implement the company's 2001 consumer outreach plan. DirecTV has never used a PR agency for this part of the business before. For Cincinnati-based P&G, the firm will handle the Pert Plus hair care product line. This account will be headed in Orange County by PainePR SVP Linda Landers, who recently rejoined the firm from Burson-Marsteller, where she served as managing director of its LA technology practice.

Blockbuster New Media, which has previously worked with PainePR, tapped it to support the launch of new broadband and alternative distribution initiatives. This business will be headed by LA SVP Daryl McCullough.

Still independently owned and operated, PainePR now has about 60 full-time employees. According to David Paine, fees for 2000 are up nearly 60% to dollars 7.5 million from last year's dollars 4.4 million.
