CHICAGO: Newly created electric utility Exelon has begun what will be a multi-million dollar rebranding campaign.

The dollars 12 billion company, which formed officially October 20 with the completed merger of Philadelphia-based PECO Energy Co. and Chicago-based Unicom, has no PR agency of record. A decision on the matter will be made soon, according to Don Kirchoffner, VP of corporate communications.

Exelon used the Tierney Group, Philadelphia, for advertising and some PR work related to its launch, but neither of the utilities in the dollars 8 billion deal to become Exelon had PR agencies of record in the past.

The possibility of working with the new Chicago company is likely to have major PR shops salivating.

Kirchoffner is handling PR with an internal staff of four. To date, they have been handling media relations, setting up interviews with major media for the company's two co-CEOs .

Employees received 'day one' kits that included Exelon-branded merchandise, and an intranet site has been set up.
