WASHINGTON: 'Instant mobilization' will be the new watchword in public affairs campaigns if a new technology from Issues Dynamics takes off.

The Washington, DC-based company has introduced 'IDI Solutions Grassroots Manager,' which offers features that can integrate wireless phones and pagers into public affairs communications campaigns. One client, Amnesty International, is already using the wireless mobilization technology.

Issue Dynamics assistant VP Chandler Howell emphasized that the new technology lends itself to issuing calls to action that require immediacy. Existing technology already allows for sophisticated targeting.

Howell envisioned a grassroots campaign in which legislative maneuvering will lead to action being taken quickly on a bill or amendment critical to a trade association's interest. Association members can be paged, hear an explanation about what is happening and then be patched through via a wireless device to a legislator's office to express their opinion at the touch of a button.

Ellen Mullally, managing supervisor at Rainmaker Interactive, predicted that 'companies will soon start asking reporters and key influencers whether they want to receive information on their desktop computer or through their mobile phone or PDA.' When that occurs, she added, the days of the 500-word press release may be numbered.
