SAN JOSE, CA: The US-based Hoffman Agency, which already has operations in key Asia-Pacific locations, this week announced the launch of its first European outpost.

Headed by Gladys Elia, who joined Hoffman in the firm's San Jose, CA headquarters two years ago, the new UK office is located in Surrey, an area just outside London in the Thames Valley known as a hub of IT activity.

According to president Lou Hoffman, the new office will serve as a gateway to Europe and a jumping-off point for further international expansion.

'This is absolutely only our first point of entry to Europe, which has the second largest IT opportunity worldwide,' said Hoffman, promising other offices in key countries such as Germany to follow soon.

Though he said that he would prefer to grow organically, Hoffman also admitted that acquisitions were not out of the question. 'If I could find a six-to-eight-person IT boutique that wants to play on a bigger playing field, we might talk, especially by the first half of 2002,' he said.

Hoffman/UK will open its doors with a major pan-European project for Hewlett-Packard's e-services and solutions division. The Thames Valley office has picked up work for HP's UK-based software and solutions division and for Tollbridge, a DSL start-up launching in Denmark, Germany, France and the UK.

In addition to Elia, Hoffman has hired two other directors in the UK: Kate Wright, who comes from Fleishman-Hillard, and Sophia Henri, from Text 100 spin-off, August One.

One of the first and only hi-tech independents to set up operations in Asia-Pacific, Silicon Valley-based Hoffman also has offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong and Seoul.
