CNN employs 28 publicists spread between Atlanta, New York, Washington, DC and Los Angeles. Their jobs are to be axed or redefined as part of the news provider's first ever internal review of its public relations.

Sue Binford, EVP of public relations, indicated she was looking to make cuts as well as review job descriptions as a result of the changes.

CNN is also centralizing much of its content production, which will mean reduced opportunities for PR executives to place clients. Showbiz Today, NewsStand and The World Today are being pulled; and Web sites will rely more heavily on existing TV staff and wire service reports.

'We are looking for efficiencies, but this is not a cost-cutting exercise,' said Binford.

Most of CNN's PR staff are based at its Atlanta headquarters, though it currently employs five staff in New York.
