WASHINGTON: Timothy McClimon has been named chair of the American Red Cross' Corporate Advisory Council (CAC).

McClimon is the executive director of the AT&T Foundation, which engages in a variety of charitable projects.

Fifty percent of its budget goes toward education and technology projects, but the foundation is also involved in health, environmental and cultural issues.

The sensitivities and complications of corporate sponsorship in disaster relief work are addressed by the CAC. Global companies are a particular target for education, as they may have employees in countries affected by the disaster.

'There are critical issues,' McClimon said. 'What is the right way to address natural disasters, and how can corporations react quickly to help in disasters and receive some visibility for having done so?'

McClimon will also work to make more efficient use of the CAC board members' time by updating the Web site and limiting the number of face-to-face meetings through increased use of e-mail and conference calls.
