NEW YORK: Hill & Knowlton has hired Kathy Cripps as executive managing director. Cripps will co-direct the firm's national health and pharmaceutical operations as well as lead its New York practice.

Cripps was the president, COO and founder of Sciens Worldwide Public Relations. She has worked with a broad range of healthcare clients, including Aventis, SmithKline Beecham, Johnson & Johnson and Merck. Prior to that, she worked for Burson-Marsteller and Creamer Dickson Basford. Sciens has not yet found a replacement for her.

'It is intriguing to me that I will be working with healthcare people inside and outside the US and working with a company that has a global brand recognition,' said Cripps, who will join Jim Jennings in leading the national healthcare business.

'H&K has gone through some positive transition,' Cripps added. 'This is the continuation of the growth and development.'

Last month, the agency formed the Medical Knowledge Group, a medical education company that provides strategic communications planning and implementation through offices in London, New York and Toronto.

Cripps said staffing will be one of her biggest challenges, as well as competition and 'trying to figure out how to differentiate yourself, because we are all pursuing the same business.'
