The PR firm has worked in these areas in the past and decided to formalize the practice so it could better market its transaction PR capabilities, said Jeff Linton, a managing director heading the new practice. Last year, the firm worked with 12-15 clients on these issues.

It will market the new practice nationally by targeting communications to high-profile bankruptcy attorneys and investment bankers. Linton also hopes to garner speaking opportunities at various business association conferences.

Dix & Eaton is known in Cleveland for its IR capabilities. It will draw on those as well as on its media relations and editorial services areas for the new practice, Linton said. No new hires are planned for the practice.

Teams for new accounts will be assembled from existing staff.

This year's slowing economy could present a rash of new business opportunities for the practice. Takeovers and bankruptcy filings are likely to increase in a slowing economy.

'I don't want to be dancing on anybody's grave, but I think activity will pick up,' said Linton.
