LAST CALL: It's survival of the financially fittest

The folks at CBS MarketWatch are hoping TV viewers will turn their attention from the Survivor contestants who compete to build fires and outwit other tribes, to a breed of survivors who compete to build their portfolios and outsmart other investors. Yes, it's survival of the nerdiest as CBS MarketWatch is the latest outlet to copycat the Survivor format.

'In this Outback, it's your arse on the barby,' screams the Web site's decorous headline.

Upon arriving in Australia - excuse us - upon enrolling in the financial Web game, Market Watch players receive dollars 100,000 in fantasy money. Whoever amasses the largest virtual portfolio by May 14 wins the grand prize.

There are also 13 weekly prizes of dollars 1,000 in the 14-week game.

Competitors have to sign up by today, March 5, to be eligible for the grand prize.

Oh, and just to make sure the financial survivalists understand the dollars and sense of this proposition: the fire-building Australians are in competition for dollars 1 million. The supposedly financially savvy competitors are duking it out for a relatively paltry dollars 50,000.
