Magnet already counts 15% of the US' top 50 law firms as clients. They include Shearman & Sterling, Hogan & Hartson and Gray Cary Ware & Friedenrich.

EVP Paul Jensen will be responsible for a team of 10.

The operation initially will focus on the lucrative Northern California market. 'It is an important market for venture capitalists, lawyers and IT consultants who are in need of PR,' said Jensen.

Joining the firm is Nicholas Gaffney as a VP and Richard Klein as account director. Gaffney had been working for Levick Strategic Communications and will be based in San Francisco, while Klein was a VP at Rubenstein Associates and will supplement the New York office.

Separately, Magnet has hired Lynn Schulman as senior vice president and national crisis director. A 20-year industry veteran, Schulman has provided counsel to New York Life Insurance and Samsung.

As associate executive director for public information at New York City Emergency Medical Services, she helped manage communications during the World Trade Center bombing in 1993.
