PanAmSat names new comms chief

NEW YORK: PanAmSat has brought in a new global corporate

communications chief to firm up its message and identity at a time when

the future of its largest shareholder, Hughes Electronics, is under

review.

Scott Tagliarino replaces Dan Marcus as vice president of corporate and

marketing communications. Marcus is understood to have quit to become an

independent consultant.

As part of his PR strategy, Tagliarino is considering hiring agencies

outside the United States to help reaffirm PanAmSat's position as the

world's biggest commercial satellite network.

Until this appointment, he had been working as a managing director at

Omnicom corporate PR agency Gavin Anderson. And prior to that, he was

general manger of Hill & Knowlton's New York office and president of the

corporate financial division at Edelman, working with clients such as

Viacom and Samsung.

His responsibilities at PanAmSat include all PR functions, as well as

advertising, corporate marketing, creative services and corporate events

planning.

'This is a dynamic organization dealing with a lot of rapid change. It's

a very exciting place to work, ' he said.

Hughes Electronics, which owns 81% of PanAmSat, has been exploring a

deal which would allow it to acquire News Corp's satellite assets.

Reuters reported early this month that Hughes could also be spun-off

from its parent, General Motors.
