Exelon searches for PR No. 2, plans to assemble full staff in nearfuture

CHICAGO: Utility giant Exelon, in the midst of a dollars 10 million

branding and ad campaign, is searching for a No. 2 person for its PR

department.

Don Kirchoffner, VP of corporate communications, said whomever fills the

spot will oversee use of outside agencies and deal with the company's

CEO on key PR issues. He's looking for someone who understands the

utility industry and has extensive media relations experience.

The hire is part of Kirch-offner's effort to build a PR staff for

Exelon, a dollars 12 billion-in-revenue company formed last October by

the merger of Chicago's Unicom Corporation and Philadelphia's PECO

Energy Company.

'My 'staff' is only myself and two other people,' said Kirchoffner, a

veteran of the Chicago PR scene and president of the Chicago PRSA

chapter. He had been director of corporate communications for

Commonwealth Edison, Unicom's operating company, prior to the

merger.

Exelon will use part of the dollars 10 million earmarked for branding to

hire PR agency help.

PR tasks Kirchoffner wants to tackle include benchmarking projects,

focus groups to establish the effectiveness of internal communications

efforts and a communications audit.
