BSMG backs PR for McCain-Feingold

WASHINGTON: As the rhetoric over campaign-finance reform heats up

inside Senate walls, Howard Opinsky and BSMG are leading the PR battle

on the outside.

Opinsky, press secretary to John McCain during his presidential campaign

and now managing director at BSMG, helped bring together Americans For

Reform (AFR) in February. The group is pushing hard for the passage of

the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance reform bill, which is currently

being debated in the Senate.

AFR's makeup is diverse. Member groups include the League of Women

Voters, Republican Main Street, the Reform Party, Ralph Nader's Public

Citizen and AARP.

'Each group is motivating its members to write letters to Congress and

take action on their own,' Opinsky said, adding that the other side is

just as varied, with organizations such Americans for Tax Reform and the

AFL-CIO.

Opinsky admitted that many of the groups he represents consider the

McCain-Feingold bill less-than-perfect. But, he said, 'Just like

senators, these organizations have decided to put aside their

differences.'
