WASHINGTON: As the rhetoric over campaign-finance reform heats up
inside Senate walls, Howard Opinsky and BSMG are leading the PR battle
on the outside.
Opinsky, press secretary to John McCain during his presidential campaign
and now managing director at BSMG, helped bring together Americans For
Reform (AFR) in February. The group is pushing hard for the passage of
the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance reform bill, which is currently
being debated in the Senate.
AFR's makeup is diverse. Member groups include the League of Women
Voters, Republican Main Street, the Reform Party, Ralph Nader's Public
Citizen and AARP.
'Each group is motivating its members to write letters to Congress and
take action on their own,' Opinsky said, adding that the other side is
just as varied, with organizations such Americans for Tax Reform and the
