NEWS IN BRIEF

LOS ANGELES: GLAAD, which has waged a three-year public relations

campaign against conservative radio and television personality Dr. Laura

Schlessinger, claimed a major victory this week as Paramount announced

it had cancelled production of the syndicated 'Dr. Laura' television

show after just one season. The campaign was led by Joan Garry (above

right), GLAAD's executive director. Stricken with low ratings and a lack

of advertisers since its debut in September 2000, the show was moved

three months ago to a post-midnight time slot in 29 of the nation's top

30 media markets. Producers have pointed to GLAAD and other gay activist

groups as being responsible for the time shift and the show's ultimate

demise.
