CAREERS: Where I Work - Mike Spinney, senior account manager,Sterling Hager, Watertown, MA

How long have you been in your job? Four years with the agency,

five months at current position.

Describe the space you work in I've got piles of stuff composting on my

desktop. The clutter creates a comfortable work environment for me

though, as I tend to get nervous when things are too neat. My walls are

decorated with photos. Some are of my wife and daughter.

Some are reminders of the things I used to do when I had a life, most

notably fly fishing. I used to really enjoy fly fishing, but I'm no

longer sure. As for my view, it's blurry.

I wear glasses for nearsightedness, so I keep them off when working at

my desk. When I look out my door or window, I have to squint real hard

to recognize people. I think they are laughing at me, but I'm not

Do you socialize with your colleagues? I'm fortunate enough to work with

some good folks and I recruited my best friend to work here a few years

ago. That helps with the social aspects of work, but I'm a much better

employee than he is, so it's just a matter of time before professional

jealousy rots our friendship from the inside.

How often do you see the boss? Too often and for all the wrong

I'm constantly being 'called on the carpet.' If only I could learn to do

my job right, she'd never have to bother me.

How comfortable are your offices? Apart from the time I spent in the

agency's iron maiden, I've been very comfortable. It helps that the

office they keep me locked in is padded.

What is the best thing about working there? Great people and a

challenging work environment. What's more, I'm told that after five

years I'll even get to start drawing a paycheck. I can't wait until that

And the worst thing? They make me live in the basement.

Sneak us a good piece of gossip from your office It's no lie when I tell

you that I am so far out of the loop I have no idea what the latest dirt

is. I can't think of any new alien abduction or Elvis offspring

And, contrary to popular opinion, I am not responsible for the breakup

of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Tom and I are just good friends.
