US firms grew 32% in 2000; Fleishman now world No. 1

The top 25 agencies in the US grew 32% last year, and by the same

amount across the globe, new statistics reveal.

Fueled by a booming economy and a slew of dot-com business, US revenues

for the top 25 agencies skyrocketed from dollars 1.8 billion to nearly

dollars 2.4 billion, according to figures released by the Council of PR

Firms. Global revenues grew from dollars 2.6 billion to dollars 3.45

billion.

Acquisitions played a surprisingly limited part in the US expansion,

with organic growth of 23.5%. But growth in the rest of the world was

clearly boosted by acquisitions, as agencies sought to expand their

global reach. Worldwide organic growth was just 13%.

For Fleishman-Hillard, today is a historic moment, as the St.

Louis-based agency was crowned the largest agency in the world,

overtaking Burson-Marsteller, which slipped to fourth place behind the

newly-merged Weber Shandwick Worldwide and fellow WPP agency and

long-time rival Hill & Knowlton.

WSW CEO Larry Weber, who had hoped to win the No. 1 spot following the

Shandwick merger, said: 'I congratulate Fleishman, but we'll be

back.'
