place as top TV chef. Meet Kim Hunter, founder and president of Lagrant
Communications and The Lagrant Foundation.
Describe the company you work for Lagrant Communications is a full
service PR and ad agency specializing in African-American and Hispanic
We're headquartered in LA, with possible offices opening in both
Northern California and the East Coast.
What do you do? A number of things. I often feel like I am mother,
father, brother, sister, grandfather, and grandmother - not only to my
staff, but also to my clients.
What is your greatest achievement? Building my business. In 1990 I gave
birth to my first child - Lagrant Communications. In 1998 I gave birth
to my second - The Lagrant Foundation. Having learned from my first
child, I was able to limit mistakes with my second. Happily, I'm no
longer 'spoonfeeding' either company.
What was your best pitch or stunt? One time I dressed up as a California
Raisin to introduce a new product to the market.
What was your biggest screw-up? Having my secretary set up an
appointment with a prospective client. Unfortunately, his ego didn't
like it that I failed to contact him myself. That was the last time that
happened. I make my own appointments now.
What's the most daring thing you've ever done - in or out of work? Back
in 1984, when I was 22, I won two round-trip tickets on Northwest
Airlines to fly anywhere in the world. I chose Hong Kong. I did not have
anyone special in my life at the time; therefore, I sold the extra
ticket to a complete stranger.
If you could work for one company/on one account, what would it be?
American Express. You don't want to leave home without it.
What time do you get up? Too early.
What invention would make your job easier? The ability to clone myself -
possibly five times. That way, I can be at all the places I need to be
at once! (I'm a type A personality.)
What is the biggest item you've ever put on expenses? A dollars 20,000
dinner for a client that the client requested.
