INTERNATIONAL NEWS: APCO seeks more support to aid Media-MOST'sGusinsky

WASHINGTON: With its client under arrest and his TV station now

under state control, APCO Worldwide has intensified its efforts on

behalf of client Vladimir Gusinsky, ousted proprietor of Russian holding

company Media-MOST.

Russian authorities, in an early morning raid last week, seized NTV, one

of Media-MOST's premier holdings and until recently Russia's only

independent television station. Media-MOST itself had been taken over

earlier this month by its creditor Gazprom, which is a state-controlled

gas company.

Gusinsky remains under house arrest at his villa in Spain, pending

appeal of a Spanish court's decision last week to reject Russia's bid to

extradite him.

Former Congressman Don Bonker (D-WA), now EVP at APCO, has known

Gusinsky since the late 1980s and has been helping 'build support in

Congress' for him since that time.

In response to last week's takeover of NTV, Bonker said, 'This is a time

to rally his supporters, to put pressure on Mr. Putin and the Spanish

authorities who for some strange reason have kept him locked up all this

time.'

Bonker is looking to allies of Gusinsky on Capitol Hill and in the media

to keep the pressure on. He happily concedes, however, that 'the media

doesn't need much encouragement' to cover the story.
