NEW YORK: While every other major PR agency has sold out during the
last five years, Edelman has remained staunchly independent.
But last month, CEO Richard Edelman and his father, agency founder and
chairman, Dan, dined with Publicis CEO Maurice Levy in Chicago. It was
the third meeting with Levy this year.
Edelman insisted: 'Nothing's happening. I've had my dinner (with Levy)
and I've had lunch with Ed Meyer (at Grey Global Group), as well as
meetings with Bcom3, Interpublic and Cordiant. But I get called all the
time. It's not like we've appointed a merchant bank. Then, you'd have a
story,' he said.
Nevertheless, there's a new 'come and get me' tone to Edelman's
'People can come and make whatever offers they want,' he says. 'But it's
parenthetical. No one's making any offers.'
Edelman has been under pressure from his father to realize the agency's
value now that it's the last remaining independent among the top 10
