CAREERS: Where I Work - Laurie Bauer, PR director, Best Buy

How long have you been in your job? 10 years with Best Buy, two

years as director.

Describe the space you work in. It took 10 years, but I finally have new

office furniture. I've endured hand-me-down desks, chairs and bookcases

for many years. Now, I have lamps for softer lighting, a fountain for

atmosphere and toys to keep meetings fun.

Do you socialize with your colleagues? We plan monthly lunches and

quarterly team-building events, but haven't found much time for

after-hours socializing.

How often do you see the boss? At least once a day, even if it's just to

say hello.

Who is the smartest person you work with? My boss. She has a mind like a

steel trap and never forgets anything, even when I wish she would.

Who is the craziest? One of our senior PR specialists does great

imitations, especially of TV reporters.

How comfortable are your offices? While not plush, the office atmosphere

is exciting and visitors often comment on the energy. Our campus is

spread through 10 buildings, some are miles apart. You need to plan

travel time for meetings.

How often are you still there when the cleaners come round? Too often, I

know them all by name.

What is the best thing about working there? One of our company mottos is

to 'have fun while being the best.' If there isn't an element of fun in

each day, it has not been a good day.

And the worst thing? The commute. Minneapolis is in desperate need of

light rail.

What's been your biggest mistake while working there? Thinking a small,

local crisis was a little blip and it oozed for two years.

And your luckiest break? Getting out of reporting and into public

What is the biggest thing to hit your office in the past year? Sting in

Central Park.

in the house that Sheila E. built.
