P&G seizes Clairol, plans PR makeover

CINCINNATI: Procter & Gamble's acquisition of Bristol-Myers

Squibb's Clairol brands has a number of PR agencies biting their nails

as P&G examines the brands' various outside vendors.

"Our goal will be to integrate the best of the best," said Tracey Long,

a spokeswoman for P&G in Cincinnati, who would not rule out axing or

reassigning any PR firms. Vendors will be examined "brand by brand," she


Clairol's principal US agencies include BSMG Worldwide in Chicago and

two New York agencies: Blue Sky Communications and Tractenberg.

The surviving agencies will all answer to P&G's president of global

haircare, Martin Nuechtern.

P&G's agencies include Fleishman-Hillard, Northlich Communications,

Porter Novelli and Lippe Taylor Marketing Public Relations in New York,

which used to handle the Clairol account but now works on P&G's Physique


Brands involved in the dollars 4.95 billion cash acquisition include

Herbal Essences, Nice 'n Easy and Hydrience.
