GOP will take a page from Dems PR book

WASHINGTON: Poised to cede control of the Senate in the wake of Jim

Jeffords' (I-VT) defection, the GOP has told PRWeek that it will employ

the very PR strategy the Democrats used when consigned to the

Trent Duffy, press secretary for the Republican National Committee

(RNC), said the Democrats were quick to blame Republicans for every

legislative shortcoming when his party was in control. With the

Democrats calling the shots in the Senate, he said, they can expect a

taste of their own medicine.

"The perception of Washington, fed by the Democrats, is that when

something went wrong in Congress they'd say, 'They run it, they can fix

it.' Of course, they knew that wasn't true."

Also topping the RNC's communications agenda is an effort to paint

Jeffords as an opportunist who switched parties to gain a committee

chairmanship and notoriety. "We are questioning whether it was a

principled decision or a political power play," said Duffy.
